I love making ice cream. Heck, I love eating ice cream! I know I am not alone in the latter sentiment. Still, I am not one to seek out the latest ice cream parlour to hit the five boroughs. To be honest, I never feel motivated to stand in line at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory or Big Gay Ice Cream. I'm not even a fan of the much-beloved Ample Hills. But, there has been one ice cream spot that called to me with flavors like Carrot Halwa, Red Chili Chocolate, Golden Tumeric, Rose with Cinnamon Roasted Almonds, Masala Chai, and more...
Located on Brooklyn's Smith Street, Malai is a pastel-hued ice cream paradise with an Indian accent. It was difficult to narrow down my order, but I eventually opted for a scoop of Sweet Roti and Ghee paired with another of Orange Fennel. I swooned. I will definitely be visiting Malai again as the weather gets warmer, but I also think that its Indian flavor profile has inspired me in my own ice cream-making pursuits. Might be time for me to bring back a classic I haven't made in a while - Saffron Cardamom Pistachio ice cream. Then again, maybe I need to put a Mango Lassi or Rice Kheer ice cream on the menu...Open to ideas. Inspire me!
