We don't tend to eat Pumpkin Pie in August, so why do we eat Lobster Rolls in October? Perhaps it's because we're hoping that a butter-griddled hot dog bun overstuffed with sweet, white crustacean meat will bring back the smiling sun of July. We know better. Yet, with New England-esque urban "lobster shacks" open all over New York City, we try to recapture summer in a sandwich all year round.
It never quite works though. No matter the quality or care in the kitchen, a Lobster Roll doesn't taste as good as it does on a hot, bright day in June, July, or August - or better still, on the 4th of July itself.
Don't believe me? Try it in reverse. Have yourself a slice of Pumpkin Pie or a Turkey Sandwich loaded with Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce during the dog days of summer. Then we'll talk again...
