I'd always believed it was a foodie urban myth: Otto's Gorgonzola Gelato. And then word came from a trusted source. It was back on the menu. But I would have to hurry. It was only going to be featured for a week and then it would disappear into the annals of dessert lore.
I'd better grab my Metrocard right quick!
Unfortunately, life kept getting in the way. In the way until today, that is, when I grabbed a seat at Otto's marble bar and ordered the Gorgonzola and Pear Coppetta.
Pictured above, it was worth all the awe and adulation. Served simply in a glass, it is a brilliant re-imagining of an autumn cheese plate, sweetened and frozen, ready to make savory dessert naysayers swoon. Creamy Gorgonzola Gelato coupled with silky Pear Sorbet, chunks of poached pear soaked in a honeyed grape syrup called Saba, topped with crunchy Walnut Crumble -- quite a combo.
A chaser of hot, bitter Espresso washed it down nicely.
Come and get it folks, while the getting is good. Scuttlebutt is that it'll be off the menu by Thursday. I can promise you that I'll try to be back for another before then.
